Perioperative Emergency Care Team

Mike Phillips
Carol Talbot

The PECT team was introduced at Good Hope Hospital in May 1999 as part of a role development in service modernisation supporting the Departments of Anaesthesia and Theatres to improve clinical quality and operational performance. Initially funded through the WM Workforce confederation and Modernisation Agency (CIBA2 & IDEA programmes) to evaluate the clinical impact of advanced Nursing roles in Emergency care & Anaesthesia. The service has now developed with the directorate of Anaesthesia as an integral part of the management and coordination of Trauma, General, Gynaecology and Urological emergencies.

Service

The team consists of One Consultant Nurse, One Clinical Nurse Specialists and a Qualified Anaesthesia Practitioner who currently provide a service from 8 – 6 five days a week covering emergency & trauma theatres, and surgical assessment unit. The primary aim of the team is the assessment, optimisation and coordination of surgical and trauma emergencies. This routinely involves resolution of clinical problems prior to surgery found on assessment, optimisation of high risk patients, liaison with clinical specialties for effective use of operating theatre capacity through day case emergency protocols and redistribution of emergency work to elective schedules where possible.

It is expected that extended 7 day working will be introduced in the near future.
